Bristol’s Christmas Market has been getting bigger and better every year. Now in its seventh year, it is a veritable town of German shacks, but still maintains a cosy feel. Personally, I always prefer the charm of Bristol’s Christmas market to its neighbour Bath. In Bristol it’s more of an alfresco experience than manic Christmas shopping event. You’re more than likely to get a seat at one of the bars and be able to relax with your gluwein and bratwurst while listening to the renditions of a singing moose. This year sees those darling Dutch pancakes on the scene, and of course it wouldn’t be Christmas without good old Der Alpen Klaus belting out popular songs with a thick German accent.
You’ll find everything you would normally expect from a German market: giant pretzels, sausages, chocolate in the shape of a wrench, and plenty of boozy beverages. Honestly, it becomes my destination of choice throughout December. The giant advent calendar starts to fling open its doors; there’s a human-sized snow globe that you can get into (well, strictly speaking, only if you’re a child) and Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without spilling mustard from your bratwurst down your front as you contemplate buying an insanely expensive bag of sugared cashews.
