Padstow Christmas Festival
Thursday December 07 2017to Sunday December 10 2017
You've missed this event
On the shores of Padstow’s historic and downright gorgeous harbourside, a bevy of celebrity chefs are gathering. This Cornish fishing town has a reputation for pulling in big-name chefs for an annual festive and foodie celebration: Padstow Christmas Festival. Music, arts, food and drink are all part and parcel of this festival, making it a destination for a weekend getaway in the run up to Christmas as well as a great way to spend a day out.
Over the weekend there will be a whopping 64 cookery demonstrations and workshops, kicking off at midday on Thursday (so as to fit them all in!) and if you are a fan of Angela Hartnett, Rick Stein, Michel Caines, Paul Ainsworth or Nathan Outlaw, you’ll be in the right place. Oh, did I mention it’s free? In fact it’s one of the UK’s largest free food festivals and is going from strength to strength every year.
It’s not all celebrity chefs and cookery masterclasses – we are in December after all and as such you can expect a few magical, festive touches. A Narnia-inspired grotto, for example, and you can’t possibly miss the lantern parade on Friday evening, announcing the arrival of Father Christmas. After the man himself has been paraded alongside the harbour in a Victorian-style horse-drawn carriage, there'll be a mesmerising display of fireworks. It’s definitely going to be a time for mittens and mulled wine, and plenty of ooohing and aaaahing.
If you need an excuse to work up an appetite, why not take part in the Santa Fun Run at 1pm on Saturday before heading off to fill your belly and rosy your cheeks in the Festival Kitchen (that’s where you’ll find the St Austells’ brewery).
A traditional Christmas market features around 100 stalls manned by local South West artisan producers. This is where I’m planning to get some really unique Christmas presents.
Quite frankly, if you’ve not been to any food festivals this year, I’d strongly suggest Padstow. It offers everything you could possibly want in terms of food, celebrity chefs, cookery workshops and events, while basking in the balmy glow of a magical Christmas atmosphere.
