Conveniently close to London yet surrounded by stunning countryside, Berkshire is ideal for those looking to get out of the city and take in some fresh air. Indeed, this county offers a snapshot of both town and country life: the likes of Windsor and Ascot have plenty to offer in terms of shopping, dining and sightseeing, while those who fancy a slightly slower pace of life can visit tranquil villages such as Bray and Streatley.
This attractive county is certainly not short of royal associations – it is home to the famous royal residence, Windsor Castle, and Catherine Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge grew up in a small Berkshire village. Berkshire is known for its association with foodie royalty too: the king of unconventional cooking, Heston Blumenthal, attracts diners from around the world to his famous Michelin-starred restaurant, The Fat Duck in Bray.
Some big-name food brands have also taken up residence in the county: PepsiCo, Mars, Hovis and Ben & Jerry’s are all based in Berkshire. There are a large number of traditional dairy farming areas as well, and the area is synonymous with cheese production.
It’s safe to say that foodies will certainly not be short of choice here, with everything from traditional pubs like the Shurlock Inn in Shurlock Row, to Michelin-starred restaurants such as L’Ortolan in Reading and The Waterside Inn in Bray to choose from.
