Richmond upon Thames is a historic borough of London. Its name derives from the building of Henry VII’s Richmond Palace in 1501 and is named for Henry’s earldom of Richmond in North Yorkshire. The only London borough on both sides of the Thames, it has many scenic views thanks to its numerous parks; there are over 100 open spaces and parks, such as Kew Gardens, within Richmond upon Thames, including a view of the River Thames which is protected by an Act of Parliament. In regards to sports, Twickenham Stadium is in Richmond and is the second largest stadium in the UK, after Wembley, and the largest stadium in the world devoted solely to Rugby Union.
