One of many interesting facts about the Whitstable Oyster Festival is that it dates back to Norman times and traditionally was a celebration of the previous year’s successful oyster harvest. In the festival’s days of yesteryear, local fishermen would attend a formal church ceremony before spending the rest of the day feasting on oysters, dancing and playing games.
